The Midgam Project (www.Midgam.com) is a privately owned internet platform designed to disseminate psychological research and knowledge to the general community in Israel. This is a free website established by Ariel Aylon in 2005. The Midgam.com website allows registered users to complete online Hebrew versions of questionnaires in a wide array of psychological fields (e.g., social, organizational, developmental and clinical psychology). Most questionnaires have been published in leading peer reviewed journals and special care is taken that all questionnaires would maintain their strong psychometric properties on the website. Currently, Midgam.com has 86240 registered users of which 29440 are on its permanent mailing list. To date, 315820 questionnaires have been completed on the site.

The Midgam Project promotes community awareness to psychological knowledge and research in several ways:

Enhancing self awareness – this is the main element of the Midgam Project. Currently, it consists of 60 questionnaires from different psychological domains including personality, relationships, cognitive, attitudes, beliefs, family and the health research areas. Users are invited to complete the questionnaires and get personalized feedback on their results. The feedback provided is based on users' score relative to all other users on the site or a subset of these norms (e.g., the user's age and gender group). The feedback provided is in both visual (i.e., graphs showing the score of the users relative to the selected norms) and verbal format. In the case of clinically oriented questionnaires (e.g., the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale; DASS), users showing a particularly high score relative to the norms are explicitly advised to consider professional assistance.

Research Section - the aim of this section is to increase community awareness and active participation in current psychological research and enable low coast, community level psychological research. Users are invited to complete online questionnaires, but, no feedback is provided. Researchers from most universities in Israel (e.g. IDC Herzelia, Tel-Aviv University, Haifa University, Ben Gurion University, Hebrew University) have successfully collected data or currently collecting data using this section of the Midgam Project. Several research collaborations with researchers overseas are currently taking place using the Midgam Project.

The Panel - Currently, 27800 users are registered to this section of the Midgam Project where users are paid for completing surveys, market research or academic related questionnaires.

The Midgam Project is a flexible web based platform with unique benefits to researchers, particularly in psychology related research areas. These benefits include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. All data collected can be analyzed to determine relationship between existing variables. This enables the exploration of complicated research questions using relatively large samples.
  2. It is possible to use the site for experimental studies (e.g., randomly allocate experimental conditions).
  3. Longitudinal data can be collected (i.e., changes across time on specific variables).
  4. Identification and targeting of particular research cohorts (e.g., individuals scoring high on attachment anxiety).
  5. Identification and exclusion of unauthentic user data (e.g., using questionnaire completion time, contradicting demographic data, particular statistical properties).
  6. Access to a wide range of community participants.

In addition to the other advantages of data collection using the internet, in the Midgam Project:

  1. Participation is voluntary.
  2. Users can participate from their homes/work or where they find it most convenient.
  3. Data can be easily exported to commonly used statistical analysis packages (e.g., SPSS).
  4. The platform automatically provides the appropriate user forms (e.g., male/female version).
  5. Time response related data can be collected.
  6. Multimedia presentations can be integrated.

The Midgam project allows you the cooperation of a quick and a high standard distinguished participants, by standard demographic parameters such as sex, age, socio-economic status etc. and by unique psycho-graphic parameters based on the participation of users in diverse and professional personality tests.

The process of choosing the sampling is precise and easy:

  1. The researcher defines the sampling size and the sampling population by the specific parameters on demand.
  2. All the relevant potential respondents for each condition are identified in advance from the on-line panel.
  3. Invitations are sent 5 times more than the required sampling size to allow relatively quick response.
  4. If required, participants are filtered on-line according to filtering questions.
  5. After reaching the limit of the sampling size, the survey is closed for additional respondents.
  6. Results are sent to the researcher in an Excel or Spss format.
